Check the shape of an email address and whether its domain can receive mail

What this checks

It looks at two separate things. First the shape of the address, which is a syntax rule; then the domain after the at-sign, which is asked for the mail servers (MX records) that would accept a message. It cannot say whether a particular mailbox exists -- only the mail server itself could, and it will not.
